Chatroulette comparison: the main platforms side by side

Choosing between random video-chat services is easier once you know where each one came from, what it does best, and whether it is still running. This page introduces the comparison table below and explains the criteria that matter most, so you can match a platform to how you actually want to chat. Origins and current status

Two services created the category in 2009. Omegle, launched in March 2009 by Leif K-Brooks, pioneered anonymous chat with strangers and shut down in November 2023. Chatroulette, launched in November 2009 by Andrey Ternovskiy, popularised random webcam pairing and remains online today with heavy moderation.

The later platforms are all still active. Bazoocam appeared around 2010, Chatrandom around 2011 and OmeTV around 2015. Knowing which sites are live matters: if you are here after Omegle’s closure, start with our Omegle alternative page.

Specialties that set them apart

Each platform leans into something. Chatroulette is the archetypal “Next” webcam experience. Bazoocam is a French service known for mini-games and France-based geolocation. OmeTV is moderated and mobile-first with country and gender filters. Chatrandom, from the US, offers filters and group rooms alongside one-to-one chat.

These specialties are the quickest way to narrow your choice. If group conversation appeals to you, look at multi-user chat; if you want to reach a specific country, our international page explains how filters help.

How to choose the right one

Weigh a few practical criteria: cost, whether registration is needed, the strength of moderation, the availability of filters, and how well the service works on your phone. Most main platforms are free and need no account, so moderation quality and filters are often the real deciding factors.

Think about your goal, too. Language practice, meeting people locally, or simply passing time each favour a slightly different platform. Our chat without registration guide and free random chat guide cover the basics that apply everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the oldest random video-chat platform still online?

Chatroulette, launched in November 2009 by Andrey Ternovskiy, is the pioneering webcam service that is still active today. Omegle predates it by a few months, having launched in March 2009, but Omegle closed in November 2023, leaving Chatroulette as the enduring original.

What happened to Omegle?

Omegle operated from March 2009 until November 2023, when its founder announced it would close after years of moderation and safety challenges. Users have since moved to alternatives; our [comparison](/comparatif-chatroulette) and [Omegle alternative page](/alternative/omegle-alternative) can help you find a replacement.

Which platform is best for mobile?

OmeTV was built with a mobile-first approach and offers dedicated apps, which many people prefer on a phone. That said, most other services also run in a mobile browser, so you can try several before settling on one.

Are paid features worth it?

The core random chat is free everywhere, and paid extras are usually optional. Filters that let you target a gender or country can be convenient, but they are not necessary to enjoy the service. Start free and only consider paying if a specific feature genuinely helps you.
